The South Coast Regional Marine Planning commercial fisheries workshop series in January 2008 was held  at four locations across the southern half of WA and proved to be a great sucess. More than 40 commercial fishers with a wealth of experience and local knowledge had their say in the future planning and management of the south coast marine region and identified the south coast marine and coastal values and issues most important to them. The priority issues and values behind the issues were similar at each of the workshops. Commercial Fisheries Summary Chart Commercial Fisheries Summary Chart 277.82 Kb

Dominant issues included:

  • access to the coast and fishing grounds;
  • biosecurity;
  • compensation for loss of access and resources through management actions;
  • current fishery management actions, their implications for commercial fishers and associated social impacts;
  • impacts of, and justification for, marine parks;
  • information security;
  • lack of communication from management authorities;
  • lack of consultation with commercial fishers on marine management issues;
  • need for balance between stakeholders, particularly recreational and commercial fishers;
  • need for integrations of Government marine/fisheries management;
  • public education on commercial fishing
  • research/data requirements for fisheries management; and
  • resourcing for management.

The issues and comments provided by commercial fishers at the workshops are being used by the Planning Advisory Group and the Planning Working Group in drafting the South Coast Regional Marine Strategic Plan. The SCRMP commercial fisheries workshop report is a valuable source of south coast community advice on strategic marine issues and will continue to serve as a reference document for all Government agency and other coastal and marine planners and managers.
