South Coast Regional Marine Planning Community Workshop Report - Now Available! E-mail

A big thanks to everyone who attended the South Coast Regional Marine Planning community workshop series between October 2007 and January 2008. The workshops were successfully held at ten locations across the southern half of WA. The final report detailing all issues and comments raised by community members is now available. More than 220 community members with a wealth of experience and local knowledge had their say in the future planning and management of the south coast marine region and identified the south coast marine and coastal values and issues most important to them. The priority issues and values behind the issues differed at each of the workshops and within local communities. Community Workshop Summary Chart Community Workshop Summary Chart 509.62 Kb.

Dominant issues included:
  • access to resources and the coast;
  • awareness, communication, education and research;
  • catchment and estuarine management;
  • coastal development and infrastructure;
  • commercial and recreational fisheries management;
  • effectiveness of South Coast Regional Marine Planning;
  • increasing population pressures;
  • integration and coordination of Govenment and other planning and management;
  • marine and coastal conservation;
  • marine parks and zoning; and
  • resourcing for management.
The issues and the comments provided by community members at the workshops are being used by the Planning Advisory Group and the Planning Working Group in the drafting of the South Coast Regional Marine Strategic Plan. The SCRMP community workshop report is a valuable source of south coast community advice on strategic marine issues and will continue to serve as a reference document for all Government agency and other coastal and marine planners and managers.
